What bacteriostatic water is used for in research

That is exactly what bacteriostatic water is for: it contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits microbial growth — so a prepared solution stays usable longer than with plain water.

Storage and handling
Storage, temperature and usable period must follow the label and documentation for the specific product. Benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of certain bacteria but guarantees neither sterility after a withdrawal nor a universal usable period.
